The Productivity Bounce

aviciiI’ve been on an binge listening streak lately with two Avicii tracks on constant repeat. Yes I said it. I’ve been listening to the same two very Swedish, very dance friendly, bouncy remixes for days and days. If I wasn’t too far gone to care I might worry about it damaging my self-image as a bit of a connoisseur when it comes to music. You know, with an eye for quality and an appreciation for the slightly obscure. Which, when it comes down to it, is probably more aspirational than it is true. Sort of like how everyone is an above average driver.

But it works great for focusing my wayward brain. Or more like distracting it maybe. Leaving the productive part to actually get stuff done without the teenage part getting in the way. This isn’t a setup that works for me all the time, but once in a while I hit a run of a few days with a particular song or two. The longest one I ever did was something like two weeks of 10 hours days hammering out email replies to customers in an early job. The song was AC/DC’s Thunderstruck. Putting it on still makes my fingers tingle slightly, eager to get some frenzied typing done. A little sad maybe.

Smart people have looked at why this works the way it does and you should go read about it if you’re interested in the mechanics. All I care about is that it works. Now, excuse my while I go fire up the Swede and get back to my standing desk two-step.

  1. Yes to all of the above Morten! Love it! I sometimes wake up with a song in my head, and I have to play that song on repeat in order to get things done. I just might go read what the smart people have to say about it. #Productivity #GettingThingsDone. 🙂
